GLORY YEAR 1988-89

In the last 1988-89 regular season section game, Butler defeated New Castle 57-46. This win completed an undefeated section III record and began a string of four(4) consecutive section III championships. It also began a post-game celebration most of us will never forget.

The post-game atmosphere in the gym that evening was “electric”. Fans stormed the floor surrounding the team. The team surrounded by the fans, was carrying coach Mark Jula around the floor as he high-fived each player. The nets were cutted down with as much enthusiasm as I ever saw. Also during this time the Boosters were selling Championship T-shirts for $5 each. Boosters Bob Straney and Dennis Tyra were being inundated by fans wanting a shirt. Dennis said he was grabbing $5 bills and Straney was passing out T-shirts until they were all gone. Tony Grenek and Frank Pugliese were sitting on top of the bankboard doing “Rocky” impressions. What a scene!! What an unforgettable night!!
