The discontent was precipitated by a New Castle team which acquired two senior players from Texas, Marcus Thomas and Rick Steele who ultimately led New Castle to the WPIAL championship. The frustration also was precipitated by New Castle who beat Butler 3 times that year. Both regular season games went into overtime.
In the first game at home, with 3 seconds left and Butler ahead by 3 points, Butler fouled Marcus Thomas to eliminate a 3 point shot. Thomas went to the foul line, made the first shot and intentionally missed the second shot. Rick Steele was able to “tip in” the intentional miss to send the game into overtime which Butler eventually lost 85-80.
In the second game at New Castle, Butler again lost in overtime 75-73. Rick Steele led New Castle with 31 points. In this game New Castle head coach John Sarandrea was serving a 3 game suspension as disciplinary action from a previous game.
Butler again lost to New castle 67-50 in the WPIAL championship game.
